This is the dreaded Mark of the Beast.

This "PASS" Act is the new name for the Real ID Act. There was so much opposition to the Real ID Act they changed the name.
This was written and introduced by an international corporation. So the information including the digital biometric information will entered into a Global Database. Then everything you do, buy, sell,- anyplace you try to work and possibly everywhere you go will be under Global surveillance and controls.

This is covered by Monday 7/13/09 Power Hours (ignore the lightening strike report at the beginning, the podcast continues after commercial break)

The Mark of the Beast will be a tattoo, not a chip. Improved surveillance of Americans is one thing, a new global payment system that will be legal tender for 7 billion people is quite another. Who would pay for chips for several billion people that turn over no more than $2 a day? Who wants to know what they're doing anyway?

Read my free e-book Walkabout: The History of a Brief Century for the true story.

EPCglobal's goal is to drive adoption of RFID technology to the point where massive numbers of tags are made each year and the cost for silicon-based tags that can store a unique serial number drops to 5 cents per tag.
Costs have fallen steadily over the past few years and will decline further as adoption ramps up.

Thanks for the update on the price! There remains the option of removing the chip, however. Taking the Mark of the Beast is an irreversible act. Then there's the question of readers. When plastic cards are abolished, as they will be when the Mark becomes legal tender world-wide, the only remaining electronic readers with global retail coverage will be the existing UPC/EAN scanners. Even if the chips are inexpensive, new readers would have to be installed everywhere. It doesn't add up.

The role of the chip will be surveillance of the affluent; universal electronic legal tender (aka the Mark of the Beast) will be a tattoo. See my book.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. The numbers 6,6,6 are embedded in every UPC/EAN code as guard patterns. Nothing like that in the chip, I suspect. The whole story is in my book.
